As the only school in the area offering truly traditional martial arts with instructors trained in Japan, our experienced, knowledgeable instructors encourage growth in a safe, age-appropriate and non-competitive environment.


Pwang Gai Noon Ryu—the form of karate taught at Martial Arts Plus—is one of the three most common styles in Okinawa, Japan and comes from the same system as Uechi-ryū. We focus on older-style karate based on original circular, leveraged movements that stress practicality and emphasize manners and the history, philosophy, fitness, health and self-defense aspects of empty hand karate. It’s also a very rigorous workout program with body training, strengthening and stretching exercises.


The Okinawan kobudō (which literally means “ancient way to stop fighting”) is from the lineage of Matayoshi Shinpo Sensei of Naha, Okinawa. The weapons used in the course at this Dõjõ include bo, nunchaku, sai, tonfa, iyeku, kama, shu-chu, timbei, suruchin, nunti, kuwa and tekko. At Martial Arts Plus, we focus on traditional, authentic weapons and philosophy—an exciting way to get fit and develop self-esteem.


Iadio—“the way of drawing the sword”—is the use of both the live, unsharpened and sharpened blade used in every practical sword fighting technique. Because this is the “budo” (the way of the samurai), manners and philosophy are very much incorporated in this training. Unlike kendo, iadio isn’t a sport—it’s the art of learning authentic swordsmanship and deep philosophy. The name of the style taught at this school is Toei Ryu Iai Batto Renmei, which has deep roots from the “Mecca” of iaido in Kochi City, Japan.
